Tirol’s new range of Strawberry Shortcake chocolates have just started cropping up in convenience stores. Strawberry is always something of a winter theme for chocolate here and is looking like it will get particular emphasis this year. The shortcake flavour and the timing of its appearance, though, can only be intended to tie in with Christmas and the Japanese custom of marking the occasion with strawberry shortcake.
The chocolates themselves are quite delicious. A coating of white chocolate and strawberry chocolate is dotted with little bits of what taste very much like pieces of real strawberry yet the aftertaste manages to be rather buttery and creamy. For a tiny square of a chocolate, it actually does quite a good cake impression!
